If you want to have books featuring disability, don’t give magical cures. Disabled folks don’t want magical cures in literature because that’s not the reality we face. Instead, Goodman shows us a “magical” cure for this issue, which is incredibly insensitive. She wasn’t given the chance to adapt WITH her disability. All the worst of it is that towards the end, she was healed of her disability by her dragon, and suddenly her life is so much better. A lot of her pain and problems come from being disabled. This alone was handled poorly because she was disregarded by literally everyone BECAUSE of her disability. I do have spoilers in this answer in case anyone cares about that.Įona (our MC) is disabled.
